New block-paved driveways, from the sub-base up

In shortA block paving driveway is a surface of concrete blocks laid on a screeded grit bed over a compacted granular sub-base, held in by firm edges and jointed with sand. Built to suit the vehicles that use it, it can be lifted and relaid locally if a service trench is needed. We lay new block-paved driveways for homes across Málaga province and explain each layer before work starts.

What exactly is a block-paved driveway?

It is a flexible pavement made of individual concrete blocks that interlock through their shape, the joint sand between them and the edges that hold them in. Under the blocks sits a thin laying course of grit, and under that a thicker, compacted granular sub-base that carries the load down to the ground. British readers often know it as monoblock or block paving; in Spain it is called adoquinado.

The term flexible matters. Unlike a poured slab, block paving can move very slightly without cracking, and any part of it can be lifted and put back. That is useful when a water pipe or cable needs to cross the drive years later, because the repair disappears once the blocks are relaid. The layer sequence is shown in detail in our guide to the base for different traffic loads.

How does block paving compare with imprinted concrete, gravel or grass grids?

Each surface solves a different problem, and none is right for every drive. Block paving is repairable in small areas and interlocks well under turning wheels. Imprinted or stamped concrete is one continuous slab, so it looks seamless but cracks cannot be patched invisibly. Gravel is quick to lay and drains freely, but it migrates under tyres and onto the street. Grass grids keep a green look but need a well-drained base and regular care.

SurfaceStrengthsTypical drawbacks
Concrete block pavingInterlocks under traffic; local repairs possible; wide range of colours and formatsNeeds firm edges and maintained joints
Imprinted (stamped) concreteContinuous surface, few joints to weedCracks show and are hard to repair invisibly; renovation needs resurfacing
GravelFree-draining, simple to layStones scatter, ruts form, hard work for wheelchairs and wheeled bins
Grass or gravel gridPermeable and greenDepends on drainage and upkeep; less comfortable to walk on
Clay pavers or brickTraditional red-brick appearanceFormat and grade must suit vehicle use

If you already have imprinted concrete that is sound but tired, replacement is not your only option, and stamped concrete restoration may be enough. Which blocks, colours and patterns work best on a driveway?

A driveway asks for blocks thick enough for its traffic and a pattern that interlocks in every direction. Herringbone is the usual choice for drives because wheels cannot open a continuous joint line in it. Rectangular blocks in blended greys, sands or charcoal suit most villas; shaped double-T blocks suit drives that also serve as working yards.

Herringbone at 45 and 90 degrees, stretcher bond, basket weave and multi-size layouts.
  • Herringbone at 45 degrees: strongest visual and structural interlock for turning cars.
  • Herringbone at 90 degrees: similar strength, aligned with the house walls for a calmer look.
  • Stretcher bond across the direction of travel: acceptable for straight, lightly used drives.
  • Borders or soldier courses in a contrasting tone: frame the drive and mark the edge restraint.
  • Natural stone setts or cobblestones: possible, though cut faces and joints need care for vehicle use.

Concrete paving blocks are made to UNE-EN 1338, with the Spanish complement UNE 127338, while natural stone setts follow UNE-EN 1342 and clay pavers UNE-EN 1344. The standard does not choose the product for you; it sets the tests that a block must pass. We choose the class and thickness from the use described to us.

How do you build a new driveway step by step?

The sequence is the same on every drive, although the depth and materials change with the traffic. What changes most from one job to another is the preparation: what has to come out, how the levels meet the house and the street, and where the water will go.

  1. Survey and set-out: we mark the edges, the finished levels at the threshold and the street, and the direction of fall.
  2. Excavation: the old surface and soft ground are removed to the formation level, and waste is loaded for authorised disposal.
  3. Sub-base: granular material is spread and compacted in layers with a plate compactor or roller.
  4. Edges: kerbs or edge courses are bedded and haunched in concrete before the surface is laid.
  5. Drainage: channel drains or gullies are set to the finished levels where the falls require them.
  6. Laying course: grit is screeded with rails to an even depth, and never compacted before the blocks go down.
  7. Laying and cutting: blocks are laid to a string line, cut at the edges and around covers, then compacted.
  8. Jointing: dry sand is brushed in and compacted again until the joints are full.

We keep the drive tidy at the end of each working day and send photos at the main stages. Our article on common mistakes with slope, base and kerbs on garage drives shows what happens when any of these steps is shortened, which is the best argument for not shortening them.

What decides the cost of a new driveway?

The cost follows the work involved rather than the area alone. A large, flat, open drive with good access is the simplest case; a narrow drive reached through a gate, with old concrete to break out and a slope towards the garage, involves much more labour per square metre.

  • Area in square metres and the shape of the drive, since curves and many covers mean more cutting.
  • Access for machines, skips and pallet deliveries.
  • What has to be removed: old slab, tiles, soil, roots.
  • The depth of sub-base the vehicles require.
  • Blocks chosen, borders and number of colours.
  • Length of kerbs or edging and any drainage channels.

Actual figures are only published on our price site: see the cost of block paving per square metre, the factors that move the price and the calculator. For the reasoning behind the separate lines of a driveway quote, read the items in a block-paved driveway quote and, if you are weighing a lighter build against a heavier one, budget driveway or heavy-traffic build.

What if my drive needs to take a van, a motorhome or occasional lorries?

Then the build moves up a step. Heavier and longer vehicles concentrate load on fewer wheels and turn more slowly, which puts more stress on the base and the joints. We deepen the sub-base, may add a bound layer, choose a thicker block and insist on an interlocking pattern.

It is worth mentioning occasional heavy visits too, such as a removal lorry, a delivery of building materials or a fuel tanker for a heating tank. A drive that copes well with cars can still be marked by one heavy vehicle if it was never designed for it. When the drive also serves a workshop or business, our industrial yards page explains the heavier specification, and if the drive climbs to the house, read sloping driveways as well.

Is a permit needed for a new driveway in Andalusia?

Often a simplified procedure applies, but the town hall decides. Andalusia's Law 7/2021 (LISTA), article 138.1.a), places minor works of limited constructive scope that do not need a project under a responsible declaration, with Decree 550/2022 as its regulation, and each municipality's ordinance sets the exact procedure for each job.

Where the drive meets the street and the kerb must be lowered, a separate municipal authorisation is required, on the terms set by the town hall's ordinance. We execute the works and can tell you what the job includes for your paperwork, while the application itself is made by the owner or their representative. Our vehicle crossings and permits guide lists the questions to raise with the town hall.

Who will I deal with, and how do I start?

You deal directly with the autónomo who runs this site and carries out the works, Bauman Raymond Attila, based in Marbella, in English or Spanish. There is no call centre and no sales layer. We work with Mapei products, and the concrete blocks we lay are made to the standards mentioned above.

To begin, send photos of the drive from both ends, the junction with the street and any drains, with the approximate length and width and the vehicles that will use it. Send us a photo and the approximate m² – free, no-obligation quote. For care after the job, see our driveway maintenance guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is block paving better than imprinted concrete for a driveway?

Neither is better in every case. Block paving can be repaired locally and interlocks well under turning cars, while imprinted concrete has fewer joints but shows cracks that are hard to repair invisibly. If the drive may need future service trenches, block paving is usually the more practical choice.

Can a block-paved driveway be permeable?

Yes, if it is designed as permeable paving from the ground up, with open-graded layers that let water pass and a ground that can accept it. Ordinary block paving with sand joints is not a soakaway. We discuss permeable blocks where surface water has nowhere else to go.

What is the best pattern for a driveway?

Herringbone, laid at 45 or 90 degrees, is the usual recommendation because it interlocks in every direction and resists the creep caused by turning and braking tyres. Stretcher bond is acceptable on straight, lightly used drives, but we would not choose it where cars turn on the paving.

Can you lay block paving over my existing concrete drive?

Only if the slab is sound, sufficiently level and drains well, and only after checking that the new levels still work at the threshold and the street. A cracked or sunken slab passes its faults on to the blocks, so in many cases breaking it out is the sounder option.

How soon can I drive on a new block-paved driveway?

Once the blocks have been compacted and the joints filled with sand, the surface is normally ready for cars, unless a bound layer or mortar bedding was used, in which case it must cure first. We tell you on the day when it is safe to drive and park.

Do you lay red brick or clay pavers on driveways?

Clay pavers can work on driveways if the format and grade are suitable for vehicles, and they are covered by the standard UNE-EN 1344. They are less common on the Costa del Sol than concrete blocks, but we can discuss them if you want a traditional red-brick look.

Can grass grids replace a paved drive?

They can for lightly used parking where a green appearance matters and the ground drains well. Grids need a prepared base and regular care to keep the grass healthy, and they are less comfortable underfoot. For daily driving with turning, block paving is usually more practical.

Will there be manholes or covers in the new paving?

Existing inspection chambers stay accessible. We cut the blocks neatly around them or fit recessed covers that take infill paving, so the cover blends with the drive. Covers are a common weak point, so the blocks around them are cut and compacted with extra care.

Do you handle the town hall permit for the driveway?

No. We carry out the works, and the owner or their representative makes the application. Andalusian law sets a simplified route for minor works, but each town hall's ordinance decides which procedure applies, so the route for a given job should be confirmed locally.

What details do you need from me to quote a new driveway?

Photos from both ends of the drive, the junction with the street, the garage door or entrance and any drains or covers, plus approximate dimensions and the vehicles that use it. Mention slopes, standing water and access for a lorry. With that we can prepare questions or a quote.
