Benalmádena driveways built around falls, drains and water

In shortBenalmádena has three distinct centres, Arroyo de la Miel, Benalmádena Costa and Benalmádena Pueblo, plus residential areas such as Torrequebrada, Torremuelle and La Capellanía. Whatever the setting, we design every driveway we pave there around one question first: where does the rainwater go? Falls, channel drains and the junction with the garage or street are fixed before the pavers are chosen.

Why do we start with water rather than paving?

Because water is what most often undoes a driveway. Block paving lets some water through its joints, but heavy rain mostly runs across the surface. If the falls send it towards the garage door, against a wall, or into a low corner with nowhere to go, the joint sand washes out, the base softens and the pavers start to move.

So the first site visit maps the high and low points, the downpipes that discharge onto the drive and where water can legally leave the plot. Our guide to falls and drains on driveways explains the principles without figures; the right gradient depends on the specific layout.

We also ask how the drive behaves today. Owners usually know where the puddle forms, which corner stays damp longest and whether water has ever reached the garage. That local knowledge, combined with a level survey, tells us more than any standard detail could.

Which drainage solutions are typically considered?

The options are few and they are combined according to the site. None of them is chosen from a catalogue before we have seen how the drive sits relative to the house and the road.

  • A consistent fall across the whole surface so water runs off one edge
  • A channel drain across the entrance or in front of the garage door
  • A gully or sump at the lowest point, connected where a connection is permitted
  • Permeable paving in areas where letting water soak in is appropriate
  • Sealed, raised edges along walls so water is not pushed against the building

Where the drive is steep, the sloping driveway service adds stronger edge restraint and interceptor drains part-way down. On a flatter plot, the standard driveway block paving build-up applies with the falls designed in.

Which parts of Benalmádena are covered?

All of them. These sourced area names are for orientation only and imply nothing about specific properties:

  • Arroyo de la Miel
  • Benalmádena Costa, Torrequebrada and Torremuelle
  • Benalmádena Pueblo
  • La Capellanía
  • El Higuerón, at the boundary with Fuengirola

Benalmádena is one of the coastal towns of the Costa del Sol Occidental comarca, which has its own page on the sister site: block paving in the Costa del Sol Occidental. The complete municipality list is on our areas page.

What if water is already pooling on my drive?

Standing water on an existing drive can often be corrected without repaving everything. Our sister site's drainage and standing water service lifts the affected section, corrects the falls and base and, where needed, adds a channel. If the pavers are fine but stained from years of runoff, cleaning can be handled through cleaning and sealing.

For a community, any new connection or channel across shared areas needs the owners' meeting to agree, and the procedure for outdoor paving with the town hall follows Benalmádena's ordinance, which the council can confirm for your job. Frequently asked questions

Why does water collect in front of my garage door?

Usually because the drive falls towards the door, or the lowest point has no outlet. Over time the joints wash out and pavers there settle further, which makes it worse. The fix is to change the falls or add a channel drain across the opening.

Is block paving permeable?

Standard block paving lets a limited amount of water through the joints, but most heavy rain runs off the surface. Purpose-made permeable paving with wider joints and an open-graded base allows much more infiltration; it suits some areas and not others, depending on the ground and use.

Where can the water from my drive be discharged?

That depends on your plot and on local rules. Options include an existing rainwater connection, a soakaway on your own land or a garden area. Discharge onto the public road or into the sewer may be restricted, so check with the town hall before finalising the design.

Do you cover Arroyo de la Miel and Benalmádena Pueblo?

Yes. We work across the whole municipality, including Arroyo de la Miel, Benalmádena Costa, Benalmádena Pueblo, Torrequebrada, Torremuelle and La Capellanía, as well as the El Higuerón area shared with Fuengirola.

Can you fix puddles without replacing the whole drive?

Often. If pooling is limited to one area, that section is lifted, the base and falls corrected and the same pavers relaid. Our sister site for sunken paving and drainage specialises in that kind of targeted repair.

What is a channel drain?

A channel drain is a narrow trough with a grating, set flush with the paving, that collects water running across the surface and leads it to an outlet. It is commonly placed across a drive entrance or in front of a garage to stop water reaching the building.

My downpipes discharge onto the drive. Is that a problem?

It can be, because a downpipe concentrates roof water on one spot. We look at whether it can be connected to a channel or gully, or led to a garden area, so it does not wash out the joints where it lands.

Will a steep drive need extra drainage?

Usually yes. On a steep drive water gains speed and volume as it runs down, so intermediate channels or interceptors may be needed rather than just one at the bottom. Edge restraint also has to be stronger to stop the paving creeping downhill.

Is a permit needed for a new drain on my drive?

Work entirely within your plot may be minor works, but the procedure in Benalmádena is set by the municipal ordinance, so check with the town hall which route your job takes. Any new connection to the public network or work on the public footway needs specific authorisation.

What photos help you assess drainage?

A wide view of the drive, the garage door and threshold, the downpipes, any existing gullies, and above all a photo taken during or just after rain showing where water collects. Add the approximate area and what drives over it.
